Direct Selection Tool:
Select direct selection tool. Just click anywhere on the path
Type Tool:
You clicking in a photo with a type tool put the type tool in edit mode. You can enter and edit characters when the tool is in edit mode. You must commit changes to the type layer before you can perform some operations.
Pen Tool
Select the pen tool and click on the page. Just drag to draw a path. Click and drag the anchor points to modify the path. 
Rectangle Tool:
Select the Pen Tool and Click and drag on the page to draw a shape. Shape will be automatically filled with the current foreground color.
